23rd September 2024:
We were a group of eight older women who were walking the Moray Coast Trail over a number of days. This was a great place to base ourselves, though the recent bus timetable changes did mean we had to use our cars more than planned! The hostel was always warm and the showers had plenty of hot water - the main ingredients to keep us happy. Our only challenge was the height of and access to, the upper bunk beds in the big dorm. Space didn't allow but sloping ladders would have been much better for us.
Tips:Check the bus timetables just before you travel, this caught us out a bit. Lots of places to eat in the evenings but as a larger group, we always booked in advance. Loads to see and do and we thoroughly enjoyed our walk with the best weather of the Summer!

Comfortable and clean. Egg delivery is so nice! Well equipped kitchen! Quiet hours after 10pm, but those who awake at 7am and slam cabinets in the kitchen will awaken those is the sailor room! Maybe quiet times 10pm to 8 am? Leave left overs for others, clearly marked, it’s a shame to throw out food!
Tips:Findhorn village pottery. Say hello to Willlow from Amy.

My one criticism is that there was no toilet paper in either of the female cubicles when I arrived or the next morning, this was disappointing, so some had to be found in the men's toilets. However, the dorm, kitchen facilities, and location were all excellent, and I really enjoyed my stay.

The Findhorn Village hostel is located at the entrance of the village. The Crown Anchor, Captains Table as well as the local supermarket and Bakehouse are on walking distance. The hostel is also close to the Findhorn beach and ecovillage. There is a fully equipped kitchen available with plenty of pans, cutlery and other useful kitchen tools. Dorms are slightly outdated but clean. The bunkbeds give plenty of space. There is a small garden as well, if the weather permits sitting outside. There are only two showers and two toilets available (woman); that probably be a challenge if the hostel is fully booked. Staff is really friendly and supportive.
Tips:- Beautiful Findhorn beach and harbour. - Ecovillage - Good Fish & Ships at the Kimberley Inn :)

Teapot for 2 people/ espresso pot/ a couple of larger paring knives / & a big jar of communal sugar would be nice.
Tips:A visit to Pluscarden Abbey to hear the Monks chanting. A car is necessary. Call for times Leisure Centre in Elgin & the one in Nairn… Good swimming pools in both. Again a car is needed. Universal Hall for live entertainment @ super reasonable prices. TKMaxx 😊 in Inverness, next to bus station. Perfect!

We love staying in the Lobster Pot in Findhorn: it is a beautiful village and the Village Hostel is a convenient, comfortable and affordable place to stay. We love the walk from the hostel, over the heather-clad moor/dunes to the beach. A suggestion to improve the the Lobster Pot is to install a shelf and some hooks in the bathroom, as there is nowhere to place toiletries, hang clothes, etc.
Tips:We ate at the Crown & Anchor on several occasions and enjoyed the food and cosy atmosphere. The village shop is very handy and well stocked. The beach is long and sandy, with beautiful views across the Firth to the mountains in northern Scotland. We've seen seals there, at the mouth of the river.

An amazing hostel at an affordable price, as is the point of hostels. The only reason the location isn't 5 is due to the limited options of getting there due to no bus, although that's not your fault.
Tips:The foundation is great for a walk around as is the beach and woodland.

A really lovely hostel in a beautiful location. The coast is stunning. We heard seals singing out on the sandbanks. The hostel sitting area and garden were very nicely done and we appreciated the large screen TV during the election. We did not meet any staff. It was very quiet when we were there, only two other guests. It would have been useful to have had a couple of smaller saucepans. All round one of the best hostels I have ever stayed in.
Tips:A bus trip to Burghead was worth the visit to see the fascinating museum there. Also there was a boat doing wild life trips from there, including whale watching. The Captains Parlour in Findhorn does an excellent Cullen Skink ( fish soup)

I was happy overall with my stay & would come again. Thanks very much for getting the door codes to me before arrival. Just to let you know the youth group that were there at the same time were bouncing around til the early hours with loud. chatter in corridors & doors slamming. In the kitchen I had to scrub out dirty saucepans before I could use them!! I hope some kind of bus service gets resumed!!
Tips:The office is only open part time so be sure to arrange everything in good time including getting all the door codes before you travel. The hostel is well situated for fabulous sunrise& sunset views over the pretty bay and also quick access to the sand dunes& main beach, loved by swimmers. The Kimberley pub has a a good menu and outdoor seating for warm days, & The Bakehouse is a top quality whole food shop, also selling teas& snacks. Findhorn Eco village is a brisk walk or drive away for many music& meditation events, as well as guided tours, shop, visitors centre and the amazing whisky barrel houses!! Be aware groups of young people are often there and can be full of youthful exuberance!! Also note that the local bus service is sadly about to be axed at the end of July 2024. The beds are comfortable & showers& toilets kept clean. The kitchen living room area is well stocked with equipment but depends on visitors to wash up and keep things clean……this can be hit& miss!!

The stay was wonderful. Beautiful location. My only suggestion is to decrease or dim the light in hallway. if you wake up in night to use the toilet the automatic lights are so very very bright, it's shockingly awakens. I loved how its part of the community center so i could find out things going on in the area. the common area is so large and comfortable! and the garden outdoor space very soothing. I would definitely come again.
Tips:Ask bus driver to let you off at the church. it is the next stop after the post office. the wonderful bakery-store nearby closes at 3:00

A very well equipped hostel with a variety of facilities and even private rooms. I like the location in the unspoilt village of Findhorn with both bay and coastal aspects. Comfy and warm, the dorms and the quiet environment made for very restful nights.

It is a wonderful Hostel in a beautiful and peaceful environment the location was ideal for me as it was next to Findhorn Foundation. It was very clean and very well maintained. I especially loved that it was so close to the beach. Wonderful place.

Very nice hostel. Clean and set in a beautifully renovated building. Would like towels to be included as it's difficult to carry a decent towel when backpacking. Other hostels (e.g. No 1 hostel in Drumnadrochit) supply towels so this is standard elsewhere. Also it would be better if availability was shown online (e.g. on booking.com) as much easier to plan a trip when you can see this, rather than emailing. I almost booked a hotel instead as didn't want to be stuck without accommodation. Minor point but the front door to the community center is stiff to open (as if there's a heavy closer fitted) then suddenly flies against the wall if you're not used to it. Could do with attention.
Tips:If walking the Moray Coast Trail be ready for some short overgrown sections between Hopeman and Lossiemouth. My feet got quite wet. A small price to pay though to walk in such a scenic area.

Very clean, tidy and nice furnishings throughout the venue. Swift door push pad codes made entry easier than ever but the lack of staff of site made communication and questions tricky to navigate at short notice. That said, prior to my stay, Sarah was fast at replying to emails and she kindly provided an iron for my stay and other guests were friendly and fun to be around! The garden courtyard and open plan living/kitchen space was ideal for enjoy free time too. A small welcome pack or notice board tell guests about local it's to do, who to call ie taxis, where to eat, where to shop, distance to bus stops etc would make the lack of staff on site less of an issue.
Tips:If you are not a driver, note that there are no buses from Forres to Findhorn and Findhorn to Forres. Think about this before checking in/out on Sundays. I successfully hitchhiked from The Foundation back to Forres with the help of a local fisherman! There are no towels provided at the hostel so be sure to pack one or two! Also no laundry facilities for guests but The Foundation (a 10 mins walk from the Hostel) does provide amenities like this for a small change. The kitchen on site was well thought out with all equipment and some foods left from previous guests - pasta, rice etc - but I opted to eat at Torta (very nice cafe open during the day) and dinner at Kimberly Inn (small pub serving booze and food). Then breakfast at The Phoenix Cafe which offers pricey food and welcoming outdoor seating! I stayed in mid October 2022 and found a private room reasonably priced given other accommodation in the area. Cheap and cheerful - perfect for budget travel!!

You manage to create a "home from home" experience which is lovely. Travellers are left very much to get on with it which is great. I try to leave the place in the same order as I find it - I hope others do too. You are busy people juggling all sorts of community activities.
Tips:Great place in a magical setting. The Findhorn Foundation is within walking distance and there is a bus to Forres during the week and on a Saturday but not a Sunday. The beach is my favourite place. Look out for the seals! I also enjoyed visiting the Ice House which was very welcome on a hot day. Everything was there and it was cosy and warm which was fantastic.
Tips:Good to have transport at Findhorn - car, bicycle, hiking necessary because loads to see and do in the area once Findhorn itself has been exhausted! The Captain's Rest and Kimberley Hotel are great places to eat, a couple of well stocked shops there too. Phoenix cafe in the Findhorn Foundation is good - and many more in Forres and Brodie Country Fayre just outside... Enjoy!

Tips:I was there in September 2021 it was empty. Ok it is 5 miles from Forres railway station but you can get a bus to the door. Things to do around Findhorn Forres and Burghead Pictish monuments, Nelsons Tower and Elgin is not far away. But it is the peace of the beach and the Findhorn Foundation that are the big things not to miss

WE stayed in a dormitory of 4 bunkbeds. It was not easy to open the window, so there was not much fresh air. It would be better to have more rooms with fewer beds. Bins were not empty. Tips:Findhorn has a smashing beach serviced by a row of eateries so at least a day there, the water taxi takes you to nice walks across the estuary. Forres is a lovely wee town, you are close to culloden which is a great visit.

The Village Hostel is a great place to stay in Findhorn. We stayed in the Lobster Pot, which is a self-containe annexe, with bathroom and cooking facilities. A few hooks in the bathroom for hanging clothes, towels, etc. would be a good addition. As would some form of heating: it was unseasonably cold while we were there.
Tips:Fabulous long sandy beach; great watersports facilities; two good pubs which serve food, a couple of cafes and very useful village shop/post office. Burghead, Hopeman and Lossiemoth just along the coast are worth a visit, as are nearby towns of Forres and Elgin.

Warm, comfortable, well cared for hostel. Liked that we were left to make ourselves at home over the week, quiet and relaxing. Thanks for help and flexibility regarding booking and payment. Notes - loo paper in one loo and paper towels ran out over course of the week, and it wasn't cleaned much - we didn't mind as had been there all week but new guests coming in might have been less happy. Was hard to make contact with staff as we were away during office hours, might be good to have a notice in the hostel advising preferred way to make contact out of hours just in case.
Tips:Excellent outdoor course with Wild Things, who are also based at Findhorn Village Centre. Lovely food at the Kimberly Inn, especially the herring. Seals on the rocks, lovely sunsets over the firth.

The booking system is a little strange - if you book in advance and are electronically invoiced there is no reminder to pay the balance. There was minimal follow up on booking; only once I queried paying the outstanding balance. It was fine in the end,but friends had their booking cancelled due to missing a phone call without further contact/ reminder. Communal areas are clean and comfortable, but the beds have not been swept under in a long time; it was pretty dusty under there - which unpleasant when you go to reach a dropped item. The recycling/ bins seem to emptied fairly regularly but they need to be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected as they're unhygienic. These are minor things, as we had a lovely week, but felt they needed mentioned as I didn't actually meet anyone from the staff during my stay.
Tips:Bakehouse bakery/ gallery is great for lunch/ coffee. The Kimberley Inn is good pub food, their herring is great!

We really enjoyed staying at the Village Hostel. The beds were comfortable, the showers and toilets were clean and in good condition and the kitchen was well-equipped. The only slight drawback was the poor internet connection - but that may be a local problem rather than the fault of the hostel. The staff were friendly and helpful.
Tips:Findhorn is a beautiful place, with a calm bay on one side of the dunes and a fantastic sandy beach on the other. There is a sailing school on the bay which offers lessons and equipment hire, including kayaks and surfboards. The Findhorn Foundation is nearby, with beautiful grounds and an esoteric range of activities and events. Nearby towns with historic interest include -Burghead with its Pictish 'broch'; Forres with the Pictish Sueno stone; and Elgin with its ruined cathedral, dating back to the 12th century. What a friendly place with all mod coms! I enjoyed my stay very much and will recommend to family and friends. If I need to mention something worth improving: the floor in the Crew Room needed a bit of cleaning with a wet cloth. Everything else was squeaky clean though.
Tips:I had a lovely pizza at the Boathouse. Can warmly recommend Moray coastal path on the mountain bike. Also Gindhorn eco village worth a visit.

My quotation 1 for service/staff is because I didn' t see anyone of the staff. The doors were open and so we could enter the room.

We're a family of four that loved our stay. Good kitchen and outdoor area for kids. We made the mistake of forgetting a towel and had to buy one. Don't forget yours :)

29th May 2017:
we stayed in the annex which is brand spanking new and really nice. It does need a few extras which I'm sure youre probably already aware of but if not: somewhere to hang clothes/towels/ labelling of facilities e.g shower switch (it took me a while to work out how to turn it on at the mains). the means to open the velux windows and last but not least. a contact number in the annex for emergencies (the fire alarm went off very early in the morning and no of us were sure what to do).
