Thanks for a wonderful stay. I shall return.

Tips:

I ate at the Kimberley Inn and the Captain's Table. Both were very good with tasty food. The friendly village shop and post office is very well stocked. The walk to Burghead along the beach and through the forest is great. Get the bus back if you are a little tired! The best thing was watching ospreys hunting over the bay from the big windows in the hostel kitchen area. Superb!

Great hostel in an ideal location for bike touring in the area. The kitchen/sitting area especially is lovely, bright, and comfortable. Only suggestions for improvements would be some more secure bike storage, and our bunk bed was a little wobbly! But still very comfortable so definitely nothing major. Really enjoyed our stay, thanks for having us :)

Very comfy, easy self-checkin. Niceto have the local eggs to buy. Was very warm in the hostel, which was great for a tired and soaked cyclist. The bed was comfy. I couldn't quite make the shower run warm, it was barely lukewarm. Would be nice to have a safe, indoors locked storage space for bicycles.

A very well equipped hostel with a variety of facilities and even private rooms. I like the location in the unspoilt village of Findhorn with both bay and coastal aspects. One small hiccough during my stay - both available fridges froze all my groceries solid, even after being turned down! Comfy and warm, the dorms and the quiet environment made for very restful nights.

Tips:

Lots to see! Visit the Park Ecovillage and the Findhorn Bay Visitors Centre in the old Ice House.

It is a wonderful Hostel in a beautiful and peaceful environment the location was ideal for me as it was next to Findhorn Foundation. It was very clean and very well maintained. I appreciated being able to come and go as I pleased and being able to use the kitchen, lounge and dining area. It was very quiet and relaxing which is just what I needed. I especially loved that it was so close to the beach. Wonderful place.

Tips:

Definitely visit the Findhorn Foundation which is just a short 15 minute walk away they have a lovely cafe with a selection classes and groups on every week. I went to the cafe twice and had some lovely conversations with strangers it really is a special place

Only thing the hostel is missing is a drying room which would be particularly useful for kayaker, but also for other people who end up getting wet doing outdoor stuff. Nevertheless managed to get stuff dry by hanging it in the hall.

12th September 2023:

Very nice hostel. Clean and set in a beautifully renovated building. Would like towels to be included as it's difficult to carry a decent towel when backpacking. Other hostels (e.g. No 1 hostel in Drumnadrochit) supply towels so this is standard elsewhere. Also it would be better if availability was shown online (e.g. on booking.com) as much easier to plan a trip when you can see this, rather than emailing. I almost booked a hotel instead as didn't want to be stuck without accommodation. Minor point but the front door to the community center is stiff to open (as if there's a heavy closer fitted) then suddenly flies against the wall if you're not used to it. Could do with attention.

Tips:

If walking the Moray Coast Trail be ready for some short overgrown sections between Hopeman and Lossiemouth. My feet got quite wet. A small price to pay though to walk in such a scenic area.

Super little hostel in a stunning location. Kitchen well equipped, I mostly cooked meals at the hostel rather than eat out. Staff very helpful, especially "having a word" with a group of non house trained lads who were staying at the time.

Tips:

Findhorn bakehouse - excellent bread and other foodstuffs, and their Pizza nights Fri and Sat well recommended. Interesting food shop at the eco village. More food at Woodside Farm Shop and tearoom near Kinloss. Very good cycle/pedestrian routes into Kinloss and on to Forres. Goes right past the Sueno Stone which every visitor should make sure to go and see.

31st October 2022:

Very clean, tidy and nice furnishings throughout the venue. Swift door push pad codes made entry easier than ever but the lack of staff of site made communication and questions tricky to navigate at short notice. That said, prior to my stay, Sarah was fast at replying to emails and she kindly provided an iron for my stay and other guests were friendly and fun to be around! The garden courtyard and open plan living/kitchen space was ideal for enjoy free time too. A small welcome pack or notice board tell guests about local it's to do, who to call ie taxis, where to eat, where to shop, distance to bus stops etc would make the lack of staff on site less of an issue.

Tips:

If you are not a driver, note that there are no buses from Forres to Findhorn and Findhorn to Forres. Think about this before checking in/out on Sundays. I successfully hitchhiked from The Foundation back to Forres with the help of a local fisherman! There are no towels provided at the hostel so be sure to pack one or two! Also no laundry facilities for guests but The Foundation (a 10 mins walk from the Hostel) does provide amenities like this for a small change. The kitchen on site was well thought out with all equipment and some foods left from previous guests - pasta, rice etc - but I opted to eat at Torta (very nice cafe open during the day) and dinner at Kimberly Inn (small pub serving booze and food). Then breakfast at The Phoenix Cafe which offers pricey food and welcoming outdoor seating! I stayed in mid October 2022 and found a private room reasonably priced given other accommodation in the area. Cheap and cheerful - perfect for budget travel!!

We will definitely be back. 2 things that could’ve been better - we weren’t given enough sheets; we were missing a bottom sheet for one of the hunks. But I’d like to stress how helpful and friendly all the staff responses were. Thanks

Thanks for the great time in Findhorn. Since the bus timetables at the bus stops are still not readable it would be great if you could add a sheet with the timetable. So that travelers without smartphone/ computers (like myself) can see them.

Tips:

Take the water taxi from the marina to the other side of the bay and enjoy a walk along the beach and through Culbin forest. Suitable for adults as well as for families with children. There is no timetable for the water taxi. Just ask at the marina. Visit Nelson Tower in Forres.

You manage to create a "home from home" experience which is lovely. Travellers are left very much to get on with it which is great. I try to leave the place in the same order as I find it - I hope others do too. You are busy people juggling all sorts of community activities.

Tips:

Great place in a magical setting. The Findhorn Foundation is within walking distance and there is a bus to Forres during the week and on a Saturday but not a Sunday. The beach is my favourite place. Look out for the seals! I also enjoyed visiting the Ice House which was very welcome on a hot day. Whilst the Hotels are lovely and eating there is a good experience, their prices are high.

Tips:

Good to have transport at Findhorn - car, bicycle, hiking necessary because loads to see and do in the area once Findhorn itself has been exhausted! The Captain's Rest and Kimberley Hotel are great places to eat, a couple of well stocked shops there too. Tips:

I was there in September 2021 it was empty. Ok it is 5 miles from Forres railway station but you can get a bus to the door. Things to do around Findhorn Forres and Burghead Pictish monuments, Nelsons Tower and Elgin is not far away. But it is the peace of the beach and the Findhorn Foundation that are the big things not to miss

Hostel is in a fantastic location, big warm and bright, the staff went above and beyond to make our stay happen during the pandemic. Fridges and dishwasher need repaired/serviced, otherwise nice big kitchen and plenty’s of room for food prep. Been before and glad we came back.

Tips:

Findhorn has a smashing beach serviced by a row of eateries so at least a day there, the water taxi takes you to nice walks across the estuary. Forres is a lovely wee town, you are close to culloden which is a great visit.

The Village Hostel is a great place to stay in Findhorn. We stayed in the Lobster Pot, which is a self-containe annexe, with bathroom and cooking facilities. A few hooks in the bathroom for hanging clothes, towels, etc. would be a good addition. As would some form of heating: it was unseasonably cold while we were there.

Tips:

Fabulous long sandy beach; great watersports facilities; two good pubs which serve food, a couple of cafes and very useful village shop/post office. Burghead, Hopeman and Lossiemoth just along the coast are worth a visit, as are nearby towns of Forres and Elgin.

The bake house, Kimberley’s, the view on the bay all at Findhorn Village. The Findhorn Community the park, located a little bit further at the same road. Warm, comfortable, well cared for hostel. Liked that we were left to make ourselves at home over the week, quiet and relaxing. Thanks for help and flexibility regarding booking and payment. Notes - loo paper in one loo and paper towels ran out over course of the week, and it wasn't cleaned much - we didn't mind as had been there all week but new guests coming in might have been less happy. Was hard to make contact with staff as we were away during office hours, might be good to have a notice in the hostel advising preferred way to make contact out of hours just in case.

Excellent outdoor course with Wild Things, who are also based at Findhorn Village Centre. Lovely food at the Kimberly Inn, especially the herring. Seals on the rocks, lovely sunsets over the firth.

The booking system is a little strange - if you book in advance and are electronically invoiced there is no reminder to pay the balance. There was minimal follow up on booking; only once I queried paying the outstanding balance. It was fine in the end,but friends had their booking cancelled due to missing a phone call without further contact/ reminder. Communal areas are clean and comfortable, but the beds have not been swept under in a long time; it was pretty dusty under there - which unpleasant when you go to reach a dropped item. The recycling/ bins seem to emptied fairly regularly but they need to be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected as they're unhygienic. These are minor things, as we had a lovely week, but felt they needed mentioned as I didn't actually meet anyone from the staff during my stay.

Bakehouse bakery/ gallery is great for lunch/ coffee. The Kimberley Inn is good pub food, their herring is great!

Another visitor had difficulty getting a hot shower and only succeeded on her final day (the third), though I must admit I had no difficulty and found it clear cut. I particularly appreciated the well stocked supplementary food cupboard as backpackers often have to go without some things when supermarkets and restaurants are not to be found close by at night.

During the winter the local restaurants and pubs are unreliably open at night and so a drive to Forres may be necessary for dinner (there are no buses).

The only reason I put a 4 for cleanliness was because the floor of the sailors room really needed sweeping. In my socks & barefeet things were sticking to them, so I picked up small bits if gravel, a broken hair clip, bits of biscuit & hair balls & put them in the bin. One of the blue chairs was also bitty & had hair on it. Maybe someone forgot to sweep it?

There was hardly any crockery, glasses and cutlery when we arrived. We had to raid kitchen next door.

Tips:

If eating out go early or later as both hotels fill quickly. We went to the Crown and Anchor twice and enjoyed what we had. Culbin Forest was an excellent place to walk.

Pro: Great staff and hostel facilities - no quibbles there. Very clean. Easy to park. Near some lovely cafes, and right next to the beach. Perfect! Con: Noisy after midnight in the communal area a few nights in a row, so a staff member there at night would help this I think.

Tips:

Kimberly in for seafood, and findhorn cafe for the bakery. The beach for peace of soul

It is a bit jarring to have zero staff when you arrive. It seems like having that mentioned very clearly would be good. I knew no one would be there. but I literally was the only person in the building for 14 hours and stuff like needing the wifi password...it could be placed more prominently.

Tips:

I found the booking procedure confusing. I assumed I would pay at the end of the procedure, but didn't see anywhere to do this (and therefore thought I would have to pay on arrival). If it hadn't been for advice from a previous guest, I wouldn't have noticed the payment link.

Hi. I actually agree with the website payment issue and it being confusing. I am looking into other options. We have started invoicing our guests directly after receiving a booking request. This includes a PayPal payment link and details of alternative payment methods.

We really enjoyed staying at the Village Hostel. The beds were comfortable, the showers and toilets were clean and in good condition and the kitchen was well-equipped. The only slight drawback was the poor internet connection - but that may be a local problem rather than the fault of the hostel. The staff were friendly and helpful.

Tips:

Findhorn is a beautiful place, with a calm bay on one side of the dunes and a fantastic sandy beach on the other. There is a sailing school on the bay which offers lessons and equipment hire, including kayaks and surfboards. The Findhorn Foundation is nearby, with beautiful grounds and an esoteric range of activities and events. Nearby towns with historic interest include -Burghead with its Pictish 'broch'; Forres with the Pictish Sueno stone; and Elgin with its ruined cathedral, dating back to the 12th century. The list is endless.

Staff helpful, but things seemed a bit disorganised. I did not receive an e-mail about the access codes, and which room I was to use. I also did not realise the staff would not be there after 4pm. Just needed a bit more information, really. Phone call to Kathy sorted things out OK.

Tips:

Excellent location and facilities. Beautiful shoreline and the whole of Findhorn Bay is a nature reserve. Plenty of places to eat/drink, and handy convenience store - all in easy walking distance. Very good cycling routes locally, with shared paths and a super bridge over the A96 into Forres. Local motorists pretty considerate too. Definitely recommended.

A lovely hostel well located in a wonderful Scottish village. We slept well in good sized bunk bedded dorms. My only concern is that there is not normally any accessible laundry facilities, and this is important for budget travellers. I recommend the hostel installing a washing machine and if possible creating a drying room or drying area.

Tips:

A visit to the Findhorn Foundation led by one of the foundation guides is highly recommenced.

we stayed in the annex which is brand spanking new and really nice. It does need a few extras which I'm sure youre probably already aware of but if not: somewhere to hang clothes/towels/ labelling of facilities e.g shower switch (it took me a while to work out how to turn it on at the mains). the means to open the velux windows and last but not least. a contact number in the annex for emergencies (the fire alarm went off very early in the morning and no of us were sure what to do).
