14th October 2021:

Maxine could not have been more welcoming. We instantly felt at ease and she was just genuinely lovely. We had dessert and drinks in the bar on our first night. Drinks were great, dessert was okay. Service again 10/10. It was a shame that the bar and restaurant were closed to the public on Monday and Tuesday but I think this was just temporary due to being short staffed. Breakfast was fantastic too and the menus were very informative in terms of allergies which I thought was brilliant. It was the owner who served us breakfast and she was again excellent and attended to our every need. The bedroom was beautifully decorated and bed really comfy. The only thing I’d say about room is that I was desperate for a bath and they only had a shower but that isn’t major. Overall we had a great experience at The Royal Oak.

Tips:

We went a wander and found Cullen House which was beautiful and then walked up to Castle Hill. Great views and would have been even better in a clearer day. Linda’s chip shop was great and so was the ice cream shop. Just being by the sea was great and hotel was so close. We ate at The Seafield Arms which was lovely and staff were great there too. Rockpool cafe coffee wasn’t the best and I would say wait for coffee at the kings to open. We visited Elgin Catherdral and The Biblical gardens which were both really worth seeing. Elgin had a cool coffee shop and a lovely tea room. There is a place called the pancake place but we were so full from breakfast we didn’t go but it looked worth a visit. We visited Lossiemouth and although beach is stunning there wasn’t much else to do there. We ate at the Harbour and it was alright. Very cold.

Return visit to The Royal Oak and again was not disappointed. Our room (8) was spotlessly clean with pleniful supples of coffee, tea and water. The shower was good and the bed was comfortable. Staff make a hotel and every single member did everything they could to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. Cannot praise them highly enough. The food in the restaurant and breakfasts could not be faulted. Service was to the highest of standards. Many thanks to Caroline,Brenda,Heather,Jamie and the rest of the team.

Tips:

Not many restaurants in Cullen but the food in The Oak Tree was excellent and competetively priced. Cullen has a great beach and harbour and numerous people were canoeing and paddle boarding. Golfers are spoilt for choice as there are some great courses within a short drive. There are some great walks and the view from Castle Hill over the town is amazing.

4th August 2021:

Very helpful and friendly staff. The breakfast menu was excellent and varied (my better half says the vegetarian sausages weren't too nice though). The evening meal was really good with a good variety on offer. There's also real ale on tap which is always good. All the ingredients are locally sourced too! The room was comfy and clean, but being single glazed, the road noise through the night was noticeable. In room 5 the 'saniflow' machine was noisy and went off at random intervals through the night. Overall I'd recommend The Royal Oak Hotel as a base to explore the Banff, Buchan and Moray areas.

Tips:

Lots of antique shops, cafés and shops in the town and a fantastic ice cream parlour too! The harbour is picturesque as are the small streets and cottages between it and the main road and hotel. You can walk along the top of the old railway viaducts and access the ruins of Cullen Castle for great views of the firth and sea.

Special mention to Maxine in the reception for making us very welcome and for Brenda in the restaurant for her attentiveness. Our evening meals were very tasty and both full scottish and vegetarian breakfasts were delicious and just what we needed to set us up for a day exploring Cullen.

Tips:

Very excited to see dolphins playing close to the harbour and along the coast. This was pointed out to us by a friendly local man walking his dog. Lovely cakes and coffee in The Rock Pool cafe with friendly service. A visit to the antique shops in the old church on the main street was very interesting.

Check out local walks if that is your thing as some are circular to Portknockie / Findochty for example. Other local villages offer sea trips for dolphins etc so check them out too. Of course you can eat in the hotel - but there are lots of places to eat to cater for any budget. So, go to Cullen, stay at the Royal Oak and have a great time.

We had a lovely and most relaxing stay at The Royal Oak Hotel. Our room was freshly decorated and exceptionally clean and comfortable. The food was excellent and we enjoyed meals from a good selection of breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. The staff were friendly and welcoming and very attentive throughout our stay.

Tips:

Cullen itself was lovely to explore with its vintage and antique shops and gift shops. A walk along the viaduct and viewpoints are a must. A beautiful area with lovely coastal walks.

Cannot recommend highly enough. The food at both breakfast and dinner, was extremely fresh and cooked to perfection. The staff were all genuinely friendly and helpful, without ever being intrusive. The room was quiet and tastefully decorated, and the shower was super powerful. I also loved the shampoo/shower gel, really good quality. There is not a bad word could honestly be said about this hotel.

Out stay was a triumph from start to finish. The staff from the lady who checked us in to the bar / restaurant staff, everyone was friendly and nothing was too much trouble. We had breakfast both mornings which was excellent and served at the table due to the current restrictions. We ate both evenings in the restaurant and the food was excellent with large portions. We also had lunch and once again excellent. There were a good selection of draught offerings at the bar as well as gin selections for my partner. All in all a superb place to stay with beautiful views and we can’t wait to return in the not too distant future.

All staff were very friendly and helpful, rooms were comfy and clean, really good choice for breakfast, i guess buffet breakfasts are now a thing of the past due to covid, plus they had a good selection of evening meals as well.Due to new covid restrictions we were only allowed to drink outside, back step was a bit dodgy to outside, slippy as hell, tables and chairs were provided for outside but no Gazebos and no shelter made it a rather unpleasant experience in the current weather conditions, but other than that Cullen itself is a beautifull town and well worth a visit

We would definitely satay here again in the future and will recommend to our friends and family.

10th August 2020:

We were a bit nervous staying away for our first time since lockdown began, but upon arrival the receptionist gave us a very warm welcome and without prompting explained what measures the hotel had put in place given the current global pandemic - they really had thought of everything. We have never met such a lovely, pleasant and genuine receptionist before who really did want to make you feel welcome. This immediately put us at ease and after being shown to our room we could start to enjoy our long weekend staying at the hotel. Our room had an amazing view, had everything you could need, was very clean and was made up fresh each day. The Wi-Fi signal in the room was always very strong. Nice touches were the bottles of Speyside Glenlivet water and shortbread every day and the use of The Scottish Fine Soaps Company sea kelp products in the bathroom. The view from the room was lovely to come back to after being out each day and the beach was only a short walk from the hotel. We had breakfast every morning in the hotel and worked our way through the different options enjoying them all. We had dinner in the hotel 2 of the evenings and it was nice to be able to eat out again after so long in a safe and friendly atmosphere enjoying a complimentary bottle of wine one evening for booking direct. I would have liked to have seen Speyside Brewery in the bar though especially as one of their ales is “Bow Fiddle”. Although I can recommend The Orkney Brewery’s “Northern Light”. Every member of staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble and customer service came naturally. You really felt like a guest rather than a customer. We were looked after very well by everyone we encountered during our stay and didn’t want to leave. So much so we extended our stay an extra night which says it all. Hope to see you all again next summer.

Tips:

The beach is only a short walk from the hotel and a walk along it after dinner is a perfect way to end the day. A walk across the railway viaduct for me was a must and a walk up Castle Hill was also rewarded with a beautiful view. During a drive along the coast we encountered numerous beautiful seaside villages. Other nice local places we visited included Craigmin Bridge, Bow Fiddle Rock and Tarlair open air swimming pool (currently not in use). We enjoyed Linda’s Fish & Chips and with there being 6 of us we were split as to whether The Ice Cream Shop in Cullen or Portsoy Ice Cream was better so why not try both and make your own mind up...

Lovely little hotel, we stayed in room 5 which was clean and the bed was comfy. Couple of negatives were the noise of the traffic going past as hotel was right in road and windows were not double glazed, also curtains were not blacked out so at 4.30 the room was very bright. All staff are really friendly and a great team. I can easily recommend this Hotel to any one visiting the area. There is a residents only car park providing safe off the street parking right next to the Hotel.

Tips:

The Moray Coast is a close place to my heart as I was brought up here. There is some stunning coastline, great beaches an walks. The area is steeped in history with some ancient buildings and places to visit. There is Whiskey trail and many distilleries in the area to visit and see how your favourite tipple is made. The Moray Coast probably sees the best weather in Scotland as the normal SW to NE passage of weather means most of the rain fall is in the Highlands. Enjoy.
